| Father Vincent Capodanno was shot and
killed in Vietnam, by A Viet Cong soldier on September 4, 1967, while running to the aid
of a medical corpsman and a Marine. He was born in Elm park, Staten Island where he graduated from Curtis High School and studied at Maryknoll to become a Roman Catholic missionary. He was ordained a priest in 1958. He served as a missionary in Taiwan and Hong Kong, but during the Vietnam War he felt he was needed by the Marines in the combat zone and went there in 1966. He received a posthumous Medal of Honor in 1969 for his service. A destroyer escort (Knox class Frigate - I have be told) was commisioned the USS Capodanno FF-1093. Staten Island honored him by renaming Seaside Boulevard to Father Capodanno Boulevard * some information courtesy of the Staten Island Advance Newspaper.
