New York Gov. Mario Cuomo took himself out of the presidential race on Dec. 21, citing his state's severe economic problems. Clinton later apologized to Cuomo when audio tape recordings surfaced which had Clinton calling Cuomo a "mean son of a bitch" and "someone who acts like" he has Mafia connections. The tapes were part of a scandal involving Gennifer Flowers, a part-time cabaret singer, and Clinton. A 12-year affair was alleged by Flowers and denied by Clinton.
