October is Italian American Heritage Month, celebrating the contributions of an estimated 26 million Americans of Italian descent ( click here for bills and presidential proclamations) -- the fifth largest ethnic group in the United States. Here are some little-known facts about Italian Americans.
Most Italian Americans are descended from the nearly 5 million Italians who came to the United States between 1880 and 1924. They brought with them many Italian traditions, including a wealth of folk wisdom found in ancient proverbs. Here is a sampling.
| Scopa nuova scopa bene. | A new broom sweeps clean. |
| Tale padre, tale figlio. | Like father, like son. |
| Roma non fu fatta in un giorno. | Rome wasn't built in a day |
| Volere e' potere | Where there's a will, there's a way. |
| Detto fatto. | No sooner said than done. |
| L'abito non fa il monaco. | Clothes don't make the man.(literally: The habit doesn't make the monk.) |
| Lontano dagli occhi, | Out of sight, out of mind. |
| lontano dal cuore. | (literally: far from the eyes, far from the heart) |
| Ride bene chi ride l'ultimo. | He who laughs last laughs best. |
| Patti chiari, amici cari. | Clear agreements make for good friends |
| Si salvi chi puo'. | Every man for himself. |

ITALIAN AMERICAN FESTIVALS IN THE U.S.
This list of Italian American festivals around the United States was
compiled by the National Italian American Foundation. It reflects the response to a recent
survey of our members, and is being continually updated. If your state or city is not
listed, please call the local parish in the Italian section of your city or town. The
pastor should be a good source of information about "feste" in your area. If you
want us to add a festival, please give us the state, city, name of the festival, and the
name and telephone number of a contact person. Send to Dona De Sanctis at the NIAF
Thank you for your interest and ... Buon Divertimento!
