Thought you should know this:  In 1934, President Franklin Roosevelt urged nationwide observance of a Columbus Day, and in 1937, he proclaimed every October 12th as Columbus Day. In 1971, President Nixon declared it a federal public holiday on the 2nd Monday in October (today!).
