    Named For "the Little Flower" Mayor New York City adored, La Guardia Place [south of Washington Square Park] runs between West 4th St and Houston St, and is smiled upon by a bronze statue of Fiorello La Guardia himself.

    The Verdi monument was unveiled on October 13, 1906, a day after the 414th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America. The day began with a march of Italian societies from Washington Square to the site at Broadway and West 72nd Street. Over 10,000 people attended the unveiling, attesting to the significance of the occasion in uniting Italian-Americans in celebration of their cultural and artistic heritage.

    This playground was named for Italian patriot and leader Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882). The naming was initiated by the Italian Historical Society of America as a tribute to Garibaldi as well as to the strong Italian heritage that is shared by many Brooklynites, especially residents of Bensonhurst.

  16. There is a Lt. Petrosino Square at the junction of Lafayette St., Centre St/Cleveland Pl. and Kenmare St. in the SoHo/Little Italy area of lower Manhattan, NYC, NY.

    It is actually a triangle; unfortunately, while it is surrounded by a wrought iron fence and includes several trees and shrubbery, I have been informed via email that it is not well maintained, and litter tends to pile up, diminishing the potentially elegant plaza.  Can someone help!!!!

  19. Father Demo Square - Manhattan, NY - Father Antonio Demo (1870-1936) was born on April 23, 1870, at Lazzaretto di Bassano in the province of Vicenza, Italy. His study at the diocesan and Scalabrinian seminaries was twice interrupted by mandatory military service. Father Demo immigrated to Boston to do missionary work in 1896 and arrived in New York to serve as assistant pastor of Our Lady of Pompei a few years later. In 1900 he was appointed pastor of the church, whose magnificent Italianate building stands northwest of the park at the corner of Bleecker and Carmine Streets.

  20. Joe DiMaggio Highway - Manhattan, NY - GO RUDY!!! - Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today joined Yankees owner George Steinbrenner to honor Yankee Legend Joe "Joltin' Joe" DiMaggio and to rename the West Side Highway Joe DiMaggio Highway. Adorned with crossed bats and baseballs, the new green and white signs will be posted on the southbound side of the West Side Highway at 70th Street and on the northbound side at West Street between Morris and Thames near the Brooklyn Battery Park Tunnel.
